BEIJING, CHINA – SinoFile Information Services announced in Beijing that the Great Wall Green Project Committee had chosen it to assist in promoting an environmental awareness hike next year along the Great Wall of China. The event will underscore the importance of this unique cultural heritage and highlight East-West cooperation.
It has been announced that American hiker and sportswoman Dr. Gayle Hall is taking to the Great Wall of China to raise awareness and support for environmental protection, greenification, water conservation, and health along the historic landmark. The Great Wall stretches more than 6,400 kilometers across high mountains, deserts, and valleys, but Dr. Hall is expected to follow the path of the Great Wall as defined by the Guinness Book of World Records—3,440 kilometers from Yumenguan to Shanhaiguan—positioning team members for entry into that book.
Dr. Hall notes, "The event will be known around the world—never has such a trek been undertaken by an international team. Never has an American or a Chinese woman completed a walk of the Great Wall in one continuous effort. And, never has anyone walked the distance planned for this endeavor. But more importantly, the fundamental purpose of this historic walk is to educate people in China and around the world of the pressing need to protect the Great Wall against further deterioration and erosion, and more generally, to protect and improve the ecological environment across China."
Wang Xianmin, Secretary General of the Great Wall Green Project Committee, will oversee and coordinate every aspect of the event. Wang has a distinguished career in the military, as an engineer, as a professor at Peking University, and as an author. "This is a significant event in China's modern history," noted Professor Wang, "for it offers us a unique opportunity to do some great deeds along the path of the Great Wall—raise world awareness of the current state of the Wall, promote environmental protection among the diverse peoples along the Wall, bring educational and health facilities to the backward western regions, and instill a sense of pride for one of the world's greatest surviving wonders."
Beijing SinoFile Information Consulting Services Center, as the executive co-host of this activity, will help to promote this walk by drawing in more people and companies as sponsors. "I can think of no better or more noteworthy event to participate in than this Great Wall hike," said Adrian An, Director of Market at SinoFile. "SinoFile has a tradition of community orientation, and we see this trek as one of the most important awareness programs of the 21st century in China. It will not only promote international friendship, but will serve as a seeder in pushing education, environmental conservation, and health to some of the poorest regions of the country that otherwise would have no access to development funds or media exposure."
The hike is set to begin in March 2002. Persons or corporations interested in supporting this great cause should contact Adrian An at SinoFile as soon a possible. Tel. +86.10.6605.9202, Fax +86.10.6605.9194
